Assam police prevented four Bangladeshi nationals from entering India illegally through Karimganj district


Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that police prevented four Bangladeshi nationals from entering India illegally through Karimganj district.

Sarma stated on X, “This morning at 1:30 AM, Bangladeshi citizens identified as Motiur Seikh, Mushiar Mullah, Tania Mullah, and Rita Mullah attempted to enter India through the Karimganj sector of the India-Bangladesh border. However, police effectively intervened at the zero point and promptly repelled them, preventing their unauthorized entry.”

He told media persons these people were Rohingyas and it is not related to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.

On Saturday BSF troops in collaboration with the Meghalaya Police, apprehended seven Bangladeshi nationals along with two Indian facilitators at a checkpoint near the international border.

In view of ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, BSF Meghalaya has assessed and heightened security along the Indo-Bangladesh border adopting a multi-tier domination strategy. All the apprehended illegal Bangladeshi immigrants along with their Indian facilitators were handed over to the police for necessary legal action.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the ongoing situation in Bangladesh and its implications in northeast India in a meeting with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his deputy Prestone Tynsong in Delhi. “We reviewed the overall situation of the border areas. Meghalaya has briefed the home minister that they are happy with the steps taken by the Centre. The home minister was informed about the night curfew imposed in areas along the Bangladesh border by the Meghalaya government. We have reiterated to the Home Minister that no one should be allowed to cross the border. If necessary, more manpower should be sent to guard the border,” Conrad Sangma said. Following unrest in Bangladesh the Meghalaya government has temporarily halted operations at the border haats along the 443-kilometre-long boundary with Bangladesh.

A night curfew has been imposed in the border areas for the past few days. Cross-border trade through the Integrated Border Check Post at Dawki has also come to a standstill.

Northeastern states share an over 4500km long border with Bangladesh, China, Myanmar and Bhutan. India and Bangladesh share a 4,096-km-long border, of which 262 km falls in Assam.

Sangma on Monday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured him that no individual from trouble-torn Bangladesh would be allowed to enter northeastern states, which share a 1,880-km-long border with the neighbouring country.

“The Home Minister assured that no individual from Bangladesh would be allowed to enter northeastern states and all necessary measures were being taken along the borders. Following my request, he also said that he would consider further tightening the security along the India-Bangladesh International Borders by deploying additional security forces,” Sangma said in a video message.

The Indian government is committed to keep the country’s borders safe and secure and appealed to all to maintain peace and harmony, he said quoting HM Shah.

Four Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended late on Sunday night from the Nandannagar Quarter Chowmuhani area, located on the outskirts of Agartala in Tripura.
